The Turkish Language and Literature Teaching Department; Aims to graduate independent, cooperative and proficient educators, with highly-developed critical thinking skills, strong national and ethical values, and a sense of responsibility for the community at large. Our graduates are also qualified to keep pace with contemporary and global trends in education.The program strives for the development of excellent reading, writing, and speaking skills in Turkish by providing our students with opportunities to conduct research, and through experiential teaching. The program correspondingly seeks to encourage students in the development and dissemination of their original research.

About Guidance and Psychological Counseling

It is carried out both by lecturers in the field of guidance and psychological counseling and by lecturers specialized in other fields of educational sciences. In addition, faculty members teach educational sciences courses that will be the basis for all teacher training programs. Within the framework of the Guidance and Psychological Counseling undergraduate program, both theoretical and observational and practical training is provided in areas such as learning psychology, developmental and adolescent psychology, basics of psychological counseling, basic theories, counseling skills, individual, family and group counseling, and academic research in the field of education and psychological counseling is carried out practically. In addition, students of the program can double major in psychology, anthropology and sociology.

Our students not only have knowledge in the field of basic educational sciences, but also have the knowledge, skills and equipment to provide guidance and psychological counseling services to children and adults, and reinforce these skills through school practices.

Students who graduate from our department can work as psychological counselors in schools, psychological counseling and therapy centers, and as human resources and education specialists in private and public institutions.

Objectives

  • To know and apply the history, basic philosophy and principles of PDR.
  • To be able to comprehend and apply the meaning and importance of coordination, consultation / counseling and supervision in the field of counseling.
  • To know and apply the ethical rules accepted by national and international counseling associations.
  • To learn and apply theories related to development, learning and personality development in a way that facilitates the individual's lifelong positive development and well-being.
  • Understand the environmental factors that influence normal and abnormal behavior, psychopathology, disability, and crises in the developmental process.
  • To learn and apply career counseling, processes, techniques and resources to career development and decision-making models, including those applied to specific groups in the global economy.
  • Recognize and use appropriate intervention techniques for clients in practice by learning counseling theories.
  • To learn group process, roles and behaviors of group members, therapeutic factors of group work, principles and techniques of group dynamics including developmental stages.
  • Understand and apply the basic concepts of standardized and non-standardized tests and other assessment techniques including environmental assessment, performance assessment, individual and group testing and inventory methods, psychological tests and behavioral observations.
  • To be able to conduct research in the field of counseling and guidance counseling by learning qualitative and quantitative scientific research methods and to present the results in written form.

What is the Department of Guidance and Psychological Counseling?

Guidance and Psychological Counseling is a profession that deals with the education, family and social life of individuals and provides them with counseling services on these issues. It is a department that provides counseling services for people to live their lives more meaningfully and how they should behave in the face of their problems. Graduates of the Department of Guidance and Psychological Counseling are called guidance counselors. With the services they provide, these people are good guides for the students in the institution where they work during the exam periods and in their university department choices. Graduates of the department, who analyze students' interests and abilities in the best way, define them in detail and help students make the right choice in the decision-making process.
The Department of Guidance and Psychological Counseling, which is affiliated to the Faculties of Education, is a 4-year undergraduate program. In order to be a student of this department, students must graduate from equal weight departments of high schools. The department, which accepts students in equal weight 3 score type, offers the opportunity to work in a wide range of fields. People who graduate from this field have the opportunity to work in all schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education, research centers with guidance departments, tutoring centers and private education institutions. At the same time, Apprenticeship Training Centers and Public Education Centers are also among the important working areas.

What does a graduate of Guidance and Psychological Counseling do? Where Do They Work?

Guidance and Psychological Counseling graduates have the opportunity to work in all institutions serving under the Ministry of National Education. Many private education institutions are also among the areas where they can work. They can work in various positions in Guidance and Research Centers operating under the Ministry of National Education.

They have the opportunity to work in counseling centers that provide private services as psychotherapists in line with their specialty training in their fields. Within the scope of the General Directorate of Security, they can work in various Police Vocational High Schools as well as in Police Academy institutions as counselors. They also have the opportunity to work as psychological counselors in Guidance and Counseling Bureau Chiefs and Child Branch Bureau Chiefs.

Graduates of the Department of Guidance and Psychological Counseling, who have the opportunity to find a wide range of jobs in the private sector as well as public institutions, can work in the human resources departments of companies operating in various sectors, and can serve as consultants or trainers to company employees on various issues. They can assume the role of Human Resources Specialist and Training Consultant of companies.

Graduates of the Department of Guidance and Psychological Counseling, who specialize in various fields by doing a master's degree, also have the opportunity to open their own workplace and accept clients. Graduates of this department can also work in Probation Branches or Prisons. They can work in the field of Pedagogue specialization in the Family and Juvenile Courts of the Courthouses and have wide opportunities within the scope of Social Services. English Language Teaching Department; The objective of the English Language Teaching program is to equip students with advanced and specialized knowledge in the field and to help them acquire skills for teacher research and professional development. It consists of courses including methodological and pedagogical approaches to foreign language teaching as well as raising students’ awareness of the English language system. It provides courses related to second language acquisition and second language teaching methodology and organizes practice teaching in selected schools in this way a well-balanced emphasis on theory and application is maintained throughout the program. Other courses of the program are offered by various departments of the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Moreover, through elective courses, students are provided with opportunities to pursue individual interests in various cultural and professional topics.  The Department of English Language Education has also three graduate programs (MA thesis/non-thesis and Ph.D.) within the framework of the Institute of Educational Sciences.

ABOUT

The English Language Teaching Program, in the Department of Foreign Language Education, was founded on the premise of RESEARCH, APPLICATION, MULTIPERSPECTIVE PRACTICUM and GLOBALIZATION, following the four basic principles of the Faculty of Education. With a strong background on the theories of language, language learning, and foreign language teaching, the focus of the program is research-based, a multi-dimensional practicum on teaching English as a second/foreign language.

Candidate teachers studying at our program undergo research-oriented learning processes, by nature of the courses, as of the second year in the program. In the light of such knowledge and teaching skills, the candidate teachers actualize their own teaching practices experimentally and critically. From the third year in the program, they practice teaching as part of their Teacher Education under the School Protocol between our program and neighboring schools. The candidate teachers are provided with this excellent opportunity to utilize and consolidate their knowledge in authentic teaching contexts through conducting teacher research.

For more academic sophistication, we encourage our students to consider double major/minor programs and other courses offered by the modular training programs in our institution. Further, our students are provided opportunities to be educated as teachers of Turkish as a foreign language if they complete the “Certification Program for Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language”, to begin in February 2020 Candidates who complete this certificate program will be able to work as an L2 Turkish teacher in addition to English. This will give them an edge in the job market.

Regarding the principle of globalization, our program supports the students within the Erasmus Program, which involves protocols with European institutions, and the Exchange Program, which involves some institutions in the US both of which support the students in gaining overseas experience. Finally, our program has now an accredited “Certificate Program for the IB Degree Teaching” in 2019. Upon graduation, the candidate teachers will also be able to work as international IB Degree instructors, which is considered an important emerging specialty.

 

Teaching Elementary Mathematics and Teaching Secondary Mathematics Programs are carried out under Mathematics and Science Education Department such that​; The aim of both programs is to prepare well-educated and talented candidates in line with teacher competencies determined by national and international authorities. Teacher candidates are expected to integrate various knowledge and skills while teaching and be a representative mathematics teacher for their colleagues. They are equipped with theoretical and practical knowledge about mathematics, teaching mathematics, teaching and learning theories, curriculum development, measurement and assessment, educational research, and educational and school system.

Because we believe in importance of learning by doing, we give opportunities for candidates to make practice in teaching from early years of the program. We conduct workshops where teacher candidates work in voluntarily under the monitoring of academicians. Mathematics Workshops are organized in schools in neighborhood where Support for Education program is carried out in campus. Teacher candidates work with students in the form of implementation of mathematical tasks and also scaffolding students’ mathematical understanding. Thus, they have opportunity to improve their pedagogical content knowledge before they graduate.

Teacher candidates are given opportunities to improve their skills in their area of interest by taking elective courses offered by other programs. They may apply for double major and minor degree in different programs. They may also apply for student exchange program (ERASMUS) for one-semester and take courses from a university in Europe.

The graduates work as mathematics teachers at either private or public schools. If they are satisfied with required conditions, they could work as a mathematics teacher in abroad. The graduates also work as a specialist in private education institutions.

Students are not accepted.

As in almost all areas of life, the necessity of learning and adapting to the developing technology in education has started to feel the effect and it has increased the need for equipped people to serve in this field. Computer Education and Instructional Technology Department aims to educate people qualified to answer this need.

Research

Graduates of the department can work in institutions such as information technology, educational software, web design, teaching material development in addition to primary and secondary education institutions. The Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technology is a 4-year program, and the courses in the program are designed to enable students to learn basic and up-to-date software and make applications related to them, to use information technologies effectively and to gain basic knowledge and skills for the teaching profession.

The need for individuals who are able to follow the technological developments and innovations that have left their mark on the current century and to transfer knowledge and skills to the education processes through technology is increasing. Computer Education and Instructional Technologies Department educates qualified individuals who can meet these needs with its experienced and expert staff and prepares them according to the demands of different sectors.

Application

Our program enables students to become digital literate, learn current software and use them for the profession.

Internationality

Our interdisciplinary program understanding is reflected in our double major programs and Erasmus-Exchange agreements with different faculties and departments of our university. Our students can easily find jobs and graduate from different aspects of education and other sectors, think analytically, share, learn to learn and be productive.

Our graduates work as academics, teachers, private and public managers, instructional designers, web designers, software development specialists, social media specialists, distance education coordinators, project managers, IT specialists, graphic designers and educators.
