There are two programs under Mathematics and Science Education Department: Program of Teaching Secondary Mathematics and Program of Teaching Elementary Mathematics. Teaching Secondary Mathematics program accepted their first students in 2004-2005 academic year. It was active until 2013-2014 academic year. Teaching Elementary Mathematics program accepts students since 2013-2014 academic year. Still, there are students enrolled in each of programs.
We aim to train teacher candidates who have strong content knowledge, well-developed communication skills as well as are able to think critically and apply teaching learning theories into practice. Therefore, we revise our education programs to satisfy the requirements for teachers of new era such that we give them more opportunity for practice as well as learn and apply new technologies used in mathematics education.
We have a special mathematics classroom such that there are many concrete materials and manipulatives in it and a smart board. Thus, teacher candidates have opportunity to learn about how to use materials and technology in teaching mathematics as well as prepare their own materials.
We have been carrying out various social responsibility projects since the establishment of the department. We organize Mathematics Workshops in the schools in neighborhood and apply Support for Education program in the campus. Teacher candidates voluntarily participate in the workshops and the program. Thus, they have opportunity to get teaching experience with students in different grade levels.
