About the department

Teaching Elementary Mathematics and Teaching Secondary Mathematics Programs are carried out under Mathematics and Science Education Department such that; The aim of both programs is to prepare well-educated and talented candidates in line with teacher competencies determined by national and international authorities. Teacher candidates are expected to integrate various knowledge and skills while teaching and be a representative mathematics teacher for their colleagues. They are equipped with theoretical and practical knowledge about mathematics, teaching mathematics, teaching and learning theories, curriculum development, measurement and assessment, educational research, and educational and school system.

Because we believe in importance of learning by doing, we give opportunities for candidates to make practice in teaching from early years of the program. We conduct workshops where teacher candidates work involuntarily under the monitoring of academicians. Mathematics Workshops are organized in schools in the neighborhood where Support for Education program is carried out in the campus. Teacher candidates work with students in the form of implementation of mathematical tasks and also scaffolding students’ mathematical understanding. Thus, they have an opportunity to improve their pedagogical content knowledge before they graduate.

Teacher candidates are given opportunities to improve their skills in their area of interest by taking elective courses offered by other programs. They may apply for double major and minor degree in different programs. They may also apply for student exchange program (ERASMUS) for one-semester and take courses from a university in Europe.

The graduates work as mathematics teachers at either private or public schools. If they are satisfied with required conditions, they could work as a mathematics teacher in abroad. The graduates also work as a specialist in private education institutions.
