Course Objectives:
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the theories and techniques related to teaching English to young learners.
Course Content:
The purpose of this course is to help students understand how 5-to-12 year-old children acquire language structures, skills, and subskills. The focus of the course will be on the differences between young and older learners; misconceptions on early age learners; and their learning styles (visual, auditory and affective) and strategies (metacognitive, cognitive and socio-affective). The students will prepare activities to improve young learners’ language skills (e.g. puzzles, games, storytelling,) using techniques appropriate for their cognitive, emotional and language development with the most appropriate audio-visual tools (e.g. paintings, real objects, cartoons, puppets and songs). The students will also evaluate and adapt the language teaching materials intended for young learners.
