English Language Teaching Department; The objective of the English Language Teaching program is to equip students with advanced and specialized knowledge in the field and to help them acquire skills for teacher research and professional development. It consists of courses including methodological and pedagogical approaches to foreign language teaching as well as raising students’ awareness of the English language system. It provides courses related to second language acquisition and second language teaching methodology and organizes practice teaching in selected schools in this way a well-balanced emphasis on theory and application is maintained throughout the program. Other courses of the program are offered by various departments of the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Moreover, through elective courses, students are provided with opportunities to pursue individual interests in various cultural and professional topics.  The Department of English Language Education has also three graduate programs (MA thesis/non-thesis and Ph.D.) within the framework of the Institute of Educational Sciences.

ABOUT

The English Language Teaching Program, in the Department of Foreign Language Education, was founded on the premise of RESEARCH, APPLICATION, MULTIPERSPECTIVE PRACTICUM and GLOBALIZATION, following the four basic principles of the Faculty of Education. With a strong background on the theories of language, language learning, and foreign language teaching, the focus of the program is research-based, a multi-dimensional practicum on teaching English as a second/foreign language.

Candidate teachers studying at our program undergo research-oriented learning processes, by nature of the courses, as of the second year in the program. In the light of such knowledge and teaching skills, the candidate teachers actualize their own teaching practices experimentally and critically. From the third year in the program, they practice teaching as part of their Teacher Education under the School Protocol between our program and neighboring schools. The candidate teachers are provided with this excellent opportunity to utilize and consolidate their knowledge in authentic teaching contexts through conducting teacher research.

For more academic sophistication, we encourage our students to consider double major/minor programs and other courses offered by the modular training programs in our institution. Further, our students are provided opportunities to be educated as teachers of Turkish as a foreign language if they complete the “Certification Program for Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language”, to begin in February 2020 Candidates who complete this certificate program will be able to work as an L2 Turkish teacher in addition to English. This will give them an edge in the job market.

Regarding the principle of globalization, our program supports the students within the Erasmus Program, which involves protocols with European institutions, and the Exchange Program, which involves some institutions in the US both of which support the students in gaining overseas experience. Finally, our program has now an accredited “Certificate Program for the IB Degree Teaching” in 2019. Upon graduation, the candidate teachers will also be able to work as international IB Degree instructors, which is considered an important emerging specialty.

GOALS

With a strong emphasis on quality culture, the objectives of our program include facilitating one-on-one connections between students and instructors, promoting effective utilization of information and communication technology, establishing both academic and social bonds between instructors and students, and contributing to the professional development of English language teachers through in-service education.

  1. To know the theoretical and applied concepts of linguistics and the structural characteristics of English, and to use language teaching methods and techniques in light of this knowledge.

  2. To understand and evaluate basic theories, principles, and methods of learning and teaching English as a foreign language, and to use appropriate language teaching methods and techniques.

  3. To prepare lesson plans using appropriate teaching technology, taking into account students' needs, language levels, ages, types of intelligence, and learning styles.

  4. To assess the effectiveness of ready-made course materials in relation to students' levels, ages, language proficiency, interests, and learning characteristics, and to select, use, and develop original materials accordingly.

  5. To improve English reading, speaking, writing, and listening skills, and to use them at the level of accessing, sharing, and producing information both orally and in writing.

  6. To effectively use Information and Communication Technologies in English education and teaching.

  7. To recognize literary texts such as short stories, poems, and novels in English, and to use them in teaching language skills.

  8. To evaluate the usefulness, validity, and reliability of measurement and evaluation tools and methods related to English teaching, and to use them accordingly.

  9. To know the scientific research methods necessary for academic and personal development, and to have the ability to apply them in a school environment.

  10. To experience and apply the subject and pedagogical knowledge and skills acquired by teacher candidates in a school environment, and to understand and implement the cultural and ethical responsibilities required by the profession.

What is the Department of English Language Teaching?

The Department of English Language Teaching aims to train teachers, academics, and lecturers in the field of English language education. It also seeks to ensure that students studying in the department are individuals with advanced English proficiency, comprehensive knowledge of language education, necessary skills, a love for research, and a goal of continuous self-improvement.

In addition to theoretical courses designed to enhance English language proficiency, the program focuses on equipping prospective teachers with skills in areas such as second language acquisition, teaching English to children in an engaging way, linguistics, test development techniques for English and other foreign languages, and effective foreign language teaching methods.

Alongside the mandatory core curriculum, elective courses are offered to help students gain the necessary professional foundation.

Studying English Language Teaching at Yeditepe University

The courses offered in the English Language Teaching Department aim to enhance students' foreign language skills while enabling those who choose teaching as a profession to practice it effectively. The program provides the necessary foundation for professional education. Within this scope, the department trains individuals who can use the English language accurately, fluently, and effectively for communication in both daily life and academic contexts. Graduates are equipped to recognize the importance of English as a global language and its prominent position among world languages. They graduate not just as teachers of English as a foreign language but as educators capable of teaching it as a global language.

Students in our department become proficient in applying techniques suitable for teaching foreign languages to different age groups and integrating current technology into educational systems. Starting from the third year of undergraduate education, students participate in practical teaching courses and internships in both public and private schools under the "Teacher Training in Schools" protocol. This one-year internship experience allows them to bridge theory and practice within the teaching profession.

The compulsory and elective courses in our department follow a project-based learning system. All courses are conducted in technologically equipped classrooms using the most modern teaching and learning methods, incorporating both individual and group work.

Our students can choose from a wide range of elective courses, enabling them to develop themselves according to their areas of interest. Additionally, prospective teachers have the opportunity to learn a second or third foreign language through different language courses offered by the university. Furthermore, students can benefit from exchange programs established through bilateral agreements with leading higher education institutions in Europe and the United States.

 

 

 

 

 

 

What Does an English Language Teaching Graduate Do? Where Do They Work?

Our graduates from the English Language Teaching Department, trained with a qualified and competent teaching staff, equipped with the necessary language skills, and adaptable to the needs of their era, can find employment opportunities in primary and secondary schools, university preparatory departments, and private schools. Indeed, English Language Teaching is one of the most sought-after professions in many fields.

After completing their four-year undergraduate education, our students may choose to pursue graduate studies either domestically or abroad. Our university offers various scholarship opportunities for this purpose. Within the scope of our department's educational and research activities, there are exchange program agreements for master's and doctoral programs with leading universities both in our country and globally.

Our English Language Teaching Department supports students in becoming well-rounded individuals by encouraging them to pursue a minor or double major. They can benefit from the education provided in our university's modular programs. Additionally, by participating in the Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language Certificate Program offered by our faculty, students can be trained not only as English teachers but also as Turkish teachers for foreign individuals. This provides an important career opportunity for our students.

As of 2019, our department has become an accredited institution to offer the IB Diploma Teacher Training Certificate Program. This allows our graduates to obtain the title of "IB Diploma Teacher" and gain the opportunity to work internationally. This certification is a significant advantage for career prospects in today's job market.

To achieve this, teacher candidates are provided with education that equips them with English language knowledge, awareness of modern teaching techniques, the ability to follow developments in language education worldwide, and skills in critical reading and thinking.
