Course Objectives: 
It is aimed to provide the students with the knowledge and skills to develop, implement and evaluate programs for the development of literacy skills of children with special needs.
Course Content: 

Definition and structure of reading and writing; literacy characteristics of individuals in need of special education; approaches to readiness programs; assessment of readiness to read and support readiness; teaching writing mechanics; evaluation of functional literacy and teaching functional literacy: voice-based literacy teaching, sentence-based literacy teaching, syllable-based literacy teaching, word-based literacy teaching, adaptations for literacy in the mainstream classroom; specific literacy teaching techniques / strategies in groups with different special education needs, scientifically based applications in literacy teaching; the process of adapting literacy instruction to groups in need of special education.
