Course Objectives: 
The aim of this course is to teach students the very genesis of modern Turkish literature in all (old and new) literary genres. Giving students the historical back ground is also one of the main objectives of this lecture.
Course Content: 

Declaration of The Rescript of Gülhane. Rising of modern Ottoman state and new ideas and movements. Analyzing poems from early and late generation of Tanzimat era. Rise of Turkish novel.

5 Early writers of Tanzimat III: Ziya Paşa and his works.  
6 New forms and themes in Tanzimat poetry: Recaizâde Mahmud Ekrem.  
7 Tanzimat theatre: Abdülhak Hamid Tarhan and his works.  
8 Mid-term.  
9 Rise of Tanzimat prose: New forms, themes and discussions. Emin Nihad and rise of short story.  
10 Şemseddin Sami and Taaşuk-ı Tâlât ve Fıtnat
